Randy Ellis , Coach

School: Marion Co

Coach, Marion County?s Ellis had a good idea that he was going to have a good team in his 12th season as a head coach. He just didn?t know how good. Van Buren County had won the District 6-A championship for four consecutive years and had won the Region 3 title the previous three years, but Lady Warriors seniors Shelley Gibson, Lindsey Glass, Hannah Phillips and Emily Webb were out to change that, and they did. The emergence of junior point guard Breanna Vinson, helped greatly, too. Marion (25-2) defeated Van Buren each of the four times the teams played, all coming during a 22-game winning streak snapped with a season- ending state-sectional loss to state runner-up Clarkrange. The last two victories over the Eaglettes were in the region and district finals. ?I never dreamed we?d put together the kind of season that we did,? Ellis said. ?Night in and night out, the girls played hard. We had great senior leaders. When you have leadership like we did, you can find a way. They refused to lose.?
